Create Luck Paper Craft Pheonix

Each part of the phoenix model was hand-cut and put together using bright acid free, deep-dyed, non-fading, sustainable coloured paper (the colour pigmentation being water based and made from vegetable oil). After photographing the model an illustrated mist was applied around it. This allowed the tangible model to be combined with an illustration that was both hand-drawn and digitised, creating a greater impact whilst using a diverse range of methods. The final image was then used to create posters and postcards.

Create Luck

Paper Craft Pheonix

Teaming up with Elle Double Yew we wanted to create an opportunity to showcase and push our abilities. This self-initiated project offered just that. We wanted to create a positive image and felt the sentiment of 'creating luck' reflected many of our values. The phrase also had the angle that we could literally create something lucky. We researched many creatures and items relating to good fortunes, but the luck brought from seeing a phoenix was one that resonated with us.

So we built 'Yoshi' (which means ‘good luck’) a papercraft phoenix, which measures almost a metre in height. Its design was based on a mixture of references such as historical Eastern Asian illustrations and the South African Secretary bird. Each of its many feathers were hand-cut to create a highly detailed model. Once created the model could be exhibited and photographed to create a limited run of posters.
